CURRENCY

In Development

Currency is an evening length hip hop theater performance both inspired by and in resistance to the themes of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. Currency smashes open Merchant of Venice and places Shylock at the center of our world, not as a caricature but instead as a reflection of the immigrant, working class, citizens of our port cities. From the marketplaces of West Oakland, Hong Kong, Managua, Downtown LA, and Venice, Currency explores the transactional relationships with those who come to buy our goods, our bodies, and our cultures.

Currency is a bold, evening-length Hip Hop theater performance inspired by—and resisting—the themes of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. This reimagining centers Shylock not as a caricature but as a mirror to the immigrant, working-class citizens of today’s global port cities.

Set in the marketplaces of West Oakland, Hong Kong, Managua, Downtown LA, and Venice, Currency delves into the transactional nature of human relationships. It unpacks the costs of commodifying goods, bodies, and cultures in a world driven by exchange. Through powerful storytelling and Hip Hop artistry, Currency interrogates the value systems that define our lives.
