Felonious Cabaret
Bay Area hip-hop ensemble Felonious reunites for The Bag, commissioned by Aurora Theatre Company and its Originate+Generate new play development program.
In the wake of Hip Hop's 50th anniversary, a lucrative offer brings four once-famous independent emcees back together. Now in their 50s, with families and financial responsibilities, these artists—who disbanded in the early 2000s—are asked to reunite for a private show at the 40th birthday party of a wealthy tech entrepreneur who admired their past work. Despite their initial reluctance, they agree to perform, but only for the money. This show weaves together the live spectacle of their music set with a deeper exploration of their personal histories, the sacrifices they've made for their craft, and the search for meaning in a world driven by transactions.
The Bag is a story of survival and compromise in the arts, revealing the price of integrity and the true cost of success. It's not just about the cash—it's about what you find when you reach for it. Join Felonious at Aurora for this electrifying work-in-progress concert performance of The Bag.
Featuring Bay Area artists Carlos Aguirre (aka Infinite), Keith Pinto, Tommy Shepherd (aka Emcee Soulati), and Dan Wolf, hip hop theater collective Felonious has been a force in the Bay Area theater and music scene for more than 25 years, often merging the two mediums to create intelligent, socially and politically-conscious, community-minded projects and productions that tell the stories of marginalized people and communities. From live hip hop musical performances to award-winning theater productions such as Angry Black White Boy, Stateless, and Beatbox: A Raparetta, this collective of rappers, actors, beat boxers, musicians, dancers, and writers are known to turn hip hop shows into ass-shaking musical theater.
Special Guest: Phil Wong
